解説文:
1970年代前半、ハワイ・オアフ島のノースショアには毎冬、世界中からサーファーが集結、人類が知り得る最もラディカルな波に挑戦した。それは異文化のクロスロードでもあり、ギャングやドラッグ、ヒッピーにサーファーが集まる無法地帯的な空間。そして1974年、ここに夢を追い求めて南アフリカ、オーストラリアから6人の若者がやってくる。彼らの目的は、誰も成し得なかった先進的なアプローチでサーフィン界に革命を起こすこと。しかしそこには、ノースショアをホームグラウンドとするハワイアンたちの、強いローカリズムが存在していた-。

30年以上の長きに渡り公にされず、サーフィン界のタブーとさえいわれたハワイアン自警集団"ブラックショーツ"とオーストラリア/南アフリカサーファーとの間に起きた抗争事件。現在では一大産業にまで発展したサーフィン業界の、その礎を築いた男たち(=バスティン・クルー)の夢と希望、苦悩と挫折の真相が、生々しい証言と貴重なアーカイヴ映像とでついに明かされる。これがサーフィン界最大の革命とも言われる、"バスティン・ダウン・ザ・ドアの時代"の記録である。

素晴らしい！
オージーがハワイに来て活躍し、ハワイアンは受け入れるが、ある出来事をきっかけに、ハワイアンを深く傷つけ、追われる羽目に、オージーは、サーフィンのプロ化を進める為にも、ハワイを離れられず、ついには、命すら、保証出来ない羽目に追い込まれる。
サーフィンの歴史を語る上で、外せない実話で、じぶんに置き換えて考えさせらる。

「あなたは45年間何かを続けたことがありますか？」というセリフが心に突き刺さった。「僕は死ぬまでサーフィンを続けるよ」
かっこよすぎる。
そしてMRの、「僕らはプロサーフィン界のパイオニアだと思っている。」この後のセリフが素晴らしいんだな。。

サーフィンにはまってから、サーフィンの歴史に興味を持つようにもなったが、
この作品は、ローカルとビジターの関係の原点のようで、とても興味深かった。
今は当たり前のようにASPの大会も見ているし、プロサーファー達のライディング
をネットでも見られるが、それは、先人達が苦労して築き上げた結晶なんだと
思うと、サーフィンはこれからも大事にしていきたい貴重な文化の一つと思う。
肝心の作品内容は、ハワイのローカルと今回メインとなる6人の若者を中心に
インタービュー形式で関係者が当時の状況を説明していくことで、物語を
進行していくドキュメンタリー作品。現代のサーフィン組織の素形ともなった
歴史を知りたい方にはお勧めできます。

I saw this on an overseas flight coming from Europe, and I was so happy as I would have never heard of it otherwise!

As someone who surfed in the late 70s/early 80s, guys like Mark Richards, Shaun Tomson and Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew and crew were our heroes. I was especially a huge fan of Richards, and even had his iconic "MR" superman logo on the bottom of my board. They are and remain legends today, and this movie provided not only a greater insight into the development of pro surf; but also showed where these wave-riding gods are today.

I could hardly wait to get home to buy a copy of this movie, as it is definitely one that every surfer of that generation will want. I have a copy of "Step Into the Liquid" which is a great surf flick; but "Bustin' Down the Door" is old school surfing and a documentary I can better relate to. These guys still look good nearly 30 years down the road, and their story needed to be told. Thank you Jeremy Gosch for doing so!

By the way, not a spoiler but at the end of the movie where they transform the guys surfing today into them surfing back in "the day" was a pure cinematic masterpiece!

A must see film for anybody interested in Big-wave and professional surfing.

The incredible events and fundamental paradigm shift of the sport that unfolded in 1974, on Hawaii's North Shore, are captured in this amazing and gritty documentary. The young Australian rabble rousers in the form Ian Cairns, Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, Peter Townend, Mark Richards, and one South African, Shaun Tomson, all tell their very personal and emotional stories of the dream to become Pro-Surfers.

Their (literally) do or die attitudes to surfing the colossal waves, and brazen attack on the Hawaiin surfing establishment and cultural traditions, proved too much for the Islanders and even for the immense spirit of Aloha.

With the formation of the notorious Da Hui and the Black Shorts, the islanders begin a vicious fight-back that leaves the Antipodeans in no doubt that `Bustin down the door' could cost them their lives.

From an extremely comprehensive cast of witnesses made up of surfers and industry stalwarts such as David Gilovich, Dan Merkel, Jeff Hakman, Greg Noll, Eddie Rothman, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Bob McKnight, Phil Jarrat and interviews with modern icons; Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Andy Irons, the story and background of the monumental developing events and the consequences of those changes are eloquently related.

But, by far the most riveting and emotional pieces to camera are those given by the legends themselves, especially Rabbit Bertholomew, Ian Cairns and Shaun Tomson - interviews that are truly honest (even brutally so) and poignant, with insights into their early careers and how they started surfing in the first place.

The final segment of footage provides an excellent finale to the story, one that shows the now middle-aged Mark Richards, "Rabbit" Bartholomew and Shaun Tomson in a session together, ripping up the surf and looking as stoked as they were when they were young, brazen and Bustin' down the door!

My 12 year old son and I starting surfing 2 years ago and now own about 7 surfing movies. We have now watched this movie about 5 times in one month! I don't just consider "Bustin' Down the Door" my favorite surf movie, it's just one of my favorite movies period.
Being 47 years old I used to read about "the bronzed aussies" in the surf mags, therefore I had a "one-up" on my son as to who these guys were, but my son is in agreement that this movie takes the cake.
Everything about this movie is solid, the opening song sequence is beautiful, the surfing is perfectly inter-spliced with the interviews,the story itself is absolutely key and brings together the legends of Hawaii with the "invading" south africans and austalians. There is much, much more to this story-you just gotta see it!
The ending scenes showing Shaun Tompson, Rabbit and (who was the 3rd guy?) surfing together currently, then blending into the young versions, was just fantastic!
Beautiful job, well done!
